Branding and brand names

This is an integrated skills lesson which involves some discussion, reading and writing. It explores the area of 'brands' and the associations we have with particular brand names.

During this lesson students will rank their favorite brand names and discuss what they like/dislike about them. They will read and discuss the context of a text about brand naming and complete related vocabulary building exercises. Lastly students will create and brand their own imaginary product which they will present to the rest of the class.

Age: Teenage/adult

Level: intermediate and above

Timing: 60-90 mins

Aims:

  • Expressing Opinions, Likes and Dislikes
  • Developing vocabulary through brainstorming and dictionary work
  • Developing speaking skills through making a short oral presentation

Destination - Scotland

This lesson gives students the opportunity to find out more about Scotland. It is one of a collection of four Destination UK lesson plans that look at the four countries that make up the UK.

Advertisement storyboard

In this lesson students produce a storyboard for an advertisement. It's suitable for pre-intermediate level and above. The exercises in this lesson introduce some of the elements of advertisements such as slogans.

There is a discussion on where advertisements can be found. The concept of a storyboard is introduced and an example of a storyboard for an advert is examined in detail. In the final stage of the lesson, students are given the opportunity to produce their own storyboard to advertise a product. Extension tasks are also suggested.

Getting to know Wales

Meetings 2: Getting involved in meetings

Many learners of English worry about their mistakes and allow their insecurities to prevent them from participating in meetings fully. This lesson provides reassurance that such insecurities are very common and normal. It also presents some strategies for increasing their confidence and ability to participate actively in meetings in English. The lesson also warns students that they themselves are responsible for overcoming this barrier to communication. There is also some guidance for learners with the opposite problem: overconfidence and dominance. It is suitable for a wide range of professional contexts, not just businesspeople.

  • To learn and practise some strategies to increase participation and co-operation in meetings in English.

Born, bread and buttered in London

In this lesson students hear a man being interviewed about his life in London. He talks about the different parts of London he has lived in and how things have changed in these areas.

The tasks focus students on learning more about London from Google Maps and images and the listening tasks focus them on reading between the lines of what the man says and understanding inferred meaning. Lastly, the lesson finishes with an optional grammar focus with a speaking activity based around ‘used to’ and ‘didn’t use to’.

  • to develop students abilities to understand inferred meaning
  • to develop students' listening skills
  • to develop students' ability to use ‘used to’ to talk about past habits and states

Meetings 1: Getting down to business

The beginning of a meeting presents a major dilemma: is it better to get straight down to business, or is it important to allow or even encourage small talk? The texts in this lesson present arguments from opposing viewpoints, which may help students to question their own assumptions. The lesson goes on to introduce useful language for both small talk and getting down to business, with practice in the form of role-plays.

Film festival season

In England, going to the cinema is one of the most popular leisure activities. Most towns have a cinema, usually one with several screens.

These cinemas show all the big films from Hollywood in the USA, and a much smaller number from other countries. However, there are many festivals which show films that may normally not be shown at cinemas. The festivals last for several days and show many films. This plan is based on information about two festivals in England.

Cooking in Britain Today

This lesson consists of a series of activities to help students talk about food and cooking.

The main focus of the lesson is a text based on a recent survey in the UK indicating that British people are becoming more adventurous and experimental in their cooking and eating habits due to the growing popularity of cooking programmes. This lesson should challenge stereotypes of British food and encourage students to discuss their own preferences and attitudes towards food and restaurants.
